Chapter 8: The Cedar Milepost
They left through the south gate on their wedding night, in plain grey coats, with two swords and no lantern.
In the corridor Seon-woo had given the steward one order.
"Nobody opens the bridal chamber until noon.
"If anyone asks, I am not to be disturbed."
Nam Sun-ok looked at his face, and at Ja-heon's, and at the blood drying on Ja-heon's jaw.
She did not ask.
"The gate boy owes me a favor," she said.
"Go."
Ja-heon loved that woman for it.
The marsh road ran south from the Pavilion through a dark country of reeds and black water.
The wind smelled of mud and cold plum blossom.
They kept to the ditch on the left side and walked in the shadow of the reeds, shoulder to shoulder.
Neither of them spoke for a mile.
Seon-woo's sleeve brushed Ja-heon's.
Once, when a night bird burst out of the reeds and Ja-heon flinched, Seon-woo's fingers closed around his wrist and stayed there.
