Chapter 11: What the Wolf Heard

Eskil's POV

The bite on my shoulder was still open at breakfast.

I washed it in the Longhouse washroom with cold water and looked at it in the mirror.

Two neat red crescents, crusted at the edges, a day old.

On any other wolf they would have been gone before she let go.

I put a clean shirt over them and went out to meet Reino Kettunen.

He had sent a note to the gate, written in a broad friendly hand.

River road. Noon. Just us, my boy.

I went alone because I had not decided what I would do if I didn't.

The river road ran along the Tamarack line through bare birches.

His truck was parked under them with the engine off.

He stood on the road in his fur collar, with his hands in his pockets, smiling at the sky.

"Eskil," he said. "I'm glad you came."

"You wrote."

"I did. I wanted a word with you without your grandmother's cane in it."

He walked a few paces along the verge, and I walked beside him.

"How is the girl?" Reino asked.

"She's well," I said.

"She's a spirited one. I like her. I did expect, I'll admit, that you'd lose your temper at that scene in the hall."

"You wanted me to."

"I wanted to see what you would do." He looked sideways at me. "Do you know, I've been wondering for three years what you'd do if I asked you for something."

He stopped.

"Bow," Reino said.

The Alpha voice went through the cold air and hit me square in the chest.

I felt it land.

I felt it in my ribs, in the bone.

There was nothing there to bend.

Three years ago I would have been on my knees in the snow before I knew I was moving.

Three years of practice had taught me to do the next thing.
