Chapter 11: Brinley's Terms

Brinley's POV

I had rehearsed it in the stairwell with my suitcase banging on every step.

Standing in front of him, I forgot half of it.

"Four things," I said. "Write them down if you need to."

"I won't need to," Ansel said.

"I keep my bunk on the Hollow floor. I'm not moving into some suite on yours."

"Agreed."

"Nobody touches me unless I ask. That's you, and that's everyone."

His eyes moved to my mouth and away again.

"Agreed."

"You never lie to me again. Not to protect me, not to spare me, not because it's the Crown's business."

"Agreed. I didn't lie, but I understand the difference."

"You decided for me, and you didn't say so. In my book that's the same."

"Then I agree twice."

"And you answer every question I have about the year," I said. "All of them. Even the ones that make you look bad."

"Especially those."

Dessa had backed up to the war room door with her hands over her mouth.

I ignored her.

"One more thing," I said. My voice went quiet. "I want to say it out loud, and then I want you to stand there."

He waited.

"I went a whole year thinking my family had decided I wasn't worth keeping," I said. "I thought nobody in the world would have picked me. And you knew the whole time that wasn't true, and you let me think it."

"Yes."

"You could have told me. You could have told my mother to tell me one sentence."

"The writ forbade it. The link would have lit up your bond to me, and a seer could have followed that light straight to you." He didn't flinch. "That was my reason. It's not an excuse."

"What bond?"

The corridor went silent.

Dessa made a small strangled noise.
