Chapter 5: Put Down

The lobby went quiet around me.

The guard behind the desk put down his mug.

Two Hollow Wardens drifted in from the side hall and leaned on the wall with their arms folded.

I walked up to Brant and stopped an arm's length from him.

"Put down," I said. "In the spring."

"That's what your father told the Council." His voice had gone thin. "He stood up in the hall and said you'd gone feral without a link and they had no choice. We held a moment of silence at Blood Ridge."

"I'm sure it was a good one."

"Brinley."

"You came to my ceremony," I said, "and you said I wasn't worth enough. Then you went home and bowed your head for me. Which one was the joke?"

The woman beside him shifted.

She was tall, with a pale gold braid over one shoulder and a green dress that must have cost more than my truck.

She looked from his face to mine, and I watched her do the math.

"You told me she was dead," she said to him. "You told me that on our first date."

"Not here."

"You told it as a sad story, so I would think you were gentle."

"I'm not having this conversation in a lobby."

"You're having it in a lobby with a hundred wolves listening," I said. "Pick a better time to be brave."

Somebody on the wall made a sound that was almost a laugh.
