Chapter 8: The Goddess Takes His Wolf

The feast hall had a round hole in its roof, so that the moon could look down on every naming.

Gareth held Cora's naming the next night under it.

He did not wait for the pain in his chest to ease, and he did not wait for the pack to finish grieving.

I came in through the side door with Rowan on my right and the old Alpha on my left.

The Great Elder walked behind us, and behind him came two Ashmoor wolves with Emmett between them.

Emmett's wrists were bound with rope.

The pack saw him, and a rustle went through the room.

Cora stood at the center of the floor in a white gown, with her hair up and a silver circlet on her brow.

The moonlight lit her white gown from above.

Gareth stood beside her in his black coat, gray in the face, one hand pressed to his side.

"What is this?" he said, and the Alpha's voice had a crack in it.

"A witness," I said.

"You have no standing here."

"The Goddess's law says no Luna can be named without her voice in the room."

I let the light under my skin rise until my hands glowed.

"The pillar is broken, Gareth. Until it is mended, I am the only one she speaks through. Ask the Elder."

"It's true," the Great Elder said from behind me. "It's very old law."

Gareth's mouth went tight.

"The naming proceeds."

"Then it proceeds with her voice," I said. "And with the truth first."

I turned to Emmett.

"Say what you told us on the mountain."

He looked at Gareth.

He looked at Cora, who was staring at him with huge eyes, her lips moving silently around a word.
