Chapter 13: The Hand That Poured
The paper shook very slightly in Corra's fingers, and she let everyone see it.
"I, Ila Marrow, ask the healer for the morning tea," she read, in her soft carrying voice.
"My head is full of wool and my son's crying is more than I can bear."
"I put my name to it freely."
The four elders of the council stood on the black stubble with their cloaks pulled tight.
Brannoch stood behind them with his rings flashing.
"There it is, then," he said gently. "The mother asked for the quiet herself."
"A mother who would sooner drink than hold her child."
A ripple of disgust moved through the clan.
I felt it land on a woman who was not here to answer it.
"She scratched two words on a jar," I said. "Not sick."
"A jar nobody can show us," Corra said. "Because it was smashed."
"By him," Brannoch said, and nodded toward Darek.
The ash crunched under my boots as I stepped forward.
