Chapter 18: Unfit
By Monday morning the whole country had seen Rosalie Ferrante confess.
Kari propped her phone against the kettle in the trailer so we could watch the district attorney's press conference.
He stood on the courthouse steps in a long dark coat.
"The events at Saint Anne's Hall on Sunday evening were a stunt," he said.
"A woman with no history of violence was subjected to an experiment by a defendant who is already charged with murder."
"What experiment?" Kari said to the screen. "What did she do, serve rigatoni?"
"Mrs. Ferrante is being held for psychiatric evaluation. Any statement she made in that condition has no legal weight. The dish she ate is being tested for sedatives and hallucinogens."
A reporter called out a question about the boathouse.
"A search warrant was served this morning," the district attorney said. "Human remains were found. They are decayed beyond identification, and nothing connects them to any person."
"Nothing connects them," I said. "She said she put a nurse down there."
"She said a nurse. No name, no date."
"She said she carried her down there herself."
"In front of two hundred people."
"The proof that ties the remains to Mrs. Ferrante, a nurse's identification card, was in the hands of the defendant on live television," the district attorney said. "The defendant has since been unable to produce it."
I put my hand over my mouth.
"He's saying I hid it."
"He's saying you faked it all," Kari said. "Rosalie, the badge, everything."
On the screen, he looked straight into the camera for the first time.
"This office will not let a young woman turn a town's grief into a circus. Justice will be done in a court of law, on schedule, a week from today."
