Chapter 23: Said Aloud

"You told my parents to be afraid of me."

I said it across Nan's table, and my voice shook.

"Say what you told them."

Maeve sat down again.

"I told your mother you were sick," she said. "That you'd been seen doing things you couldn't remember. That you weren't safe around Kari."

"When?"

"Three weeks before Thanksgiving. In the infusion room." She picked up her cup. "I sat with her every Thursday while you were at school. She likes company. She doesn't like silence."

"I called her every Sunday."

"And she was frightened of you by Monday."

"You planted it."

"I planted it so that when the video came, she would believe it." Her thumb moved on the china. "People forgive what they didn't expect. They never forgive what they were warned about."

I put both hands flat on the table.

"I've been wondering for a week why nobody asked me," I said. "Not Dad, not Mom, not one of you. Even Kari hesitated. Nobody said, Nina, what's wrong. You did that. You went to my mother when I wasn't there and told her to be afraid of her own daughter, and then you sat at our table and ate her apple pie."

"It was a good pie."

"I loved you."

"I know."

"That's the wound," I said. "That's what I can't take back. You didn't betray me in a day. You did it slowly, with your hand on my mother's arm."

Maeve's eyes were wet.

"I can't undo it."

"Then tell me the rest. Who else?"

She laughed once, short and awful.

"You'll never reach them all."
