Chapter 6: The Poker

Mom clutched her chest, swayed, and dropped into her chair.

Dad crossed the room in three steps and tore my bag out of my hand.

"Dad," I said. "Dad, what's wrong?"

The fireplace poker hit me square in the forehead.

The room went red.

"Don't call me that," Dad said.

I fell back against the wall.

The container burst open in my arm and ravioli rolled across the floor.

"I didn't eat them!" I was screaming. "I didn't eat a single one this time!"

Blood ran into my left eye.

The bathroom door banged open, and Kari ran in and threw herself between us.

"Dad, stop! If you hit her again I'm calling the police!"

I grabbed her sleeve and held on to it with both hands.

Mom's eyes opened.

She held her phone out across the table, her whole arm shaking.

"Look what your sister did."

Kari took the phone and looked at the screen.

Two seconds later she pulled her sleeve out of my fingers.

"Nina," she said. "You make me sick."

She walked into the kitchen.
