Chapter 11: The Empty Magazine

Dane's POV

I had not wanted the fox.

I had wanted to see her face.

That was the truth of the whole sale, and I would have to say it to her sooner or later.

But standing at the fire with a hundred beasts watching, I did not say it.

The Elder had dismissed the gathering with one tap of her cane.

The foxes were filing out of the meadow with their heads down.

Sable sat in the grass at the edge of the light with her white dress wet to the knees.

Nobody went to her.

Tobin sat where he had fallen.

Lara was ten feet from me, with her friend's arm around her shoulders, and she would not look in my direction.

I had earned that.

I walked over to the fox.

He looked up, and I saw him flinch before he could stop himself.

It was the right instinct.

Under the clause, I could order him to do anything I liked, and he knew it.

"Get up," I said.

He got up.

"Go to the barn. Eat what my sentry leaves you. Sleep.

"You will not leave the property.

"No one on my land will lay a hand on you."

"You're not going to hurt me?"

"I do not hurt people who bleed on her shoes."

His face broke.

He turned away and walked toward the barn.

I watched him go.

I had paid fifty-one thousand dollars out of the pack's reserve to buy a human woman I had never met.

I had won a fox as a side effect.

I did not want him.

I wanted to take it all back.

At the edge of the firelight, the Elder stopped beside me.

"You knew," she said.
