Chapter 4: Thirty Days

"What I signed," I said. "You mean the stamp."

"I mean the clause," said Dane.

Penny stepped between us and lifted the tire iron an inch.

"Whatever you're threatening her with, I'm a witness, and I took a video of the whole parking lot."

"Good," Dane said. "Keep it."

He looked past her at me.

"Miss Aldrin, I will not touch you and I will not take you anywhere you don't walk to. But the bond is open on your wrist now, and it is not safe to leave it open overnight."

"Open how?"

"Look at it."

I pushed up my sleeve.

The scar was still silver, and the skin around it had gone hot and tight.

It ached all the way up to my elbow.

"It will get worse before morning," Dane said. "I can close it. Not here, and not with him looking."

"With who?"

"With the whole floor. Half of them are standing at that window."

I turned.

Four or five faces were pressed to the dusty glass of the gym, and Tobin's was one of them.

My stomach dropped, and I did not like how fast it did.

"Penny," I said. "Follow us in the Honda. If I call, you call the police and you tell them exactly where we are."

"I'm following you right up to his door," Penny said. "And if he's got a basement, I'm bringing the tire iron."

"I don't have a basement," said Dane.

"Everybody says that."

He drove a black truck with a lumber company's name on the door, and he drove it carefully, with both hands.

The gorge was an hour east.
