Chapter 6: Ice

"He paid fifty-one thousand dollars to keep me out of your clan's hands," I told Tobin. "What did you pay?"

He opened his mouth and nothing came out.

Behind me, Sable said very softly, "Tobin, don't."

"Don't what?" I said.

"Don't let her turn you around."

I looked at him one more time, at the red hair I had cut in my kitchen and the freckles I had put sunscreen on in July.

Then I walked out, and Penny walked out with me.

The sky over Division Street had gone the color of slate.

"I'll drive," Penny said. "You're shaking."

"I'm not."

"You have your keys in your fist and they're making a noise."

I put them in her hand.

Dane's truck was idling at the curb.

I hadn't called him, and I did not ask how he had known where I was.

He rolled the window down.

"Ice is coming up the gorge," he said. "Forty minutes, maybe less. You can ride with me, or you can ride with Penny, and either way you'll be at the lodge by seven."

"We'll take my car," Penny said.

"Penny," I said.

"Fine. Fine, ride with the wolf. Text me every ten minutes."

I got in.

The road out of the city was dry for twenty miles, and then it was not.

The first sheet of freezing rain hit the windshield past Troutdale, and the wipers locked up under it.

Dane slowed to thirty, then twenty.

At the Bridal Veil turnoff the road turned to glass, and the back of the truck swung around without asking either of us.
