Chapter 8: Day Three

I cleaned Tobin's wound at Dane's kitchen island with his people standing in the doorway watching.

It was a long, ugly gash under his ribs.

Someone had made it with a knife and had meant it.

"Who did this?" I said.

"The clan." He hissed when I touched it. "The Elder said I'd cost her fifty thousand dollars and a keeper."

"You didn't cost her anything. She lost a bid."

"She says I should have gotten you to sign."

"Hold still."

I stitched him in neat knots, the same as I would a dog, and I did not say a kind word.

When I tied the last one off he caught my hand.

"Lara. I'm sorry."

"You said that in the clinic when you were eighteen, about a sofa," I said. "It meant more then."

He let go.

Dane had a wolf take him out to the barn with a blanket and a bowl of soup.

The doorway emptied.

I washed the blood off my hands in the kitchen sink.

I felt Dane come up behind me and stop at exactly the distance I had told him.

"You stitched him," he said.

"I stitch everyone."

"You'd sit up all night with him."

"If he's bleeding, yes."

"Seven years of that," Dane said. "I watched you tonight. I understand why you can't hate him."

I turned the water off.

"What?"

"You love him," Dane said, flatly. "That's what the sale cost you. I'm not asking you to say it."

I looked at him.

He stood with his arms at his sides and a scar through his eyebrow, believing it.

"You are the stupidest Alpha in Oregon," I said.

"Lara."

"I'm furious at him. I'd like to throw him through that window. I haven't loved him since before he could drive."

"Then why did you keep the bond?"

"Because I made a promise," I said. "And because I'm not the one who sells people. Not anyone. Not even him."
