Chapter 14: The Boy Who Pays

Wren called Jonas from the gate, before she could talk herself out of it.

"Term four," she said. "I'm calling first. Where would your mother take someone she didn't want found?"

"The lake house," he said at once. "Where are you?"

"Outside your gate."

"Stay there. I'll bring the car round."

He came down the drive in his own car, not the limousine, and leaned across to open her door.

She got in. She did not say thank you.

Hallie met them on the road in her scrubs, in a borrowed truck, and followed the whole way with her headlights on high.

The lake house stood at the end of a gravel lane, lit up on the ground floor.

A dark sedan was parked in front. The driver leaned against it, smoking.

He straightened when Jonas got out.

"Mr. Pryce. Mrs. Pryce said not to disturb anyone."

"Mrs. Pryce doesn't pay you anymore," Jonas said. "You can leave, or you can explain to the police why you took a sick woman out of her bed."

The driver looked at the car, at Hallie climbing down from the truck, and at Wren.

He dropped the cigarette and went back to his sedan.

Wren ran up the steps.

A nurse's aide Margaret had hired sat in the front hall with her coat on and a magazine in her lap.

"She's upstairs," the aide said. "I only did what I was told."

"Which room?"

"The blue one. At the end."

Ruth sat on the edge of a made bed, in her lilac cardigan, with her braid over her shoulder and her shoes lined up on the rug.
