Gojo's secretary booked them two rooms in Osaka this time, on separate floors.
At eleven the night before the pitch, someone knocked on Tomoya's door.
He opened it already knowing.
Ren stood in the corridor in a T-shirt and sleep trousers, holding a canned coffee in each hand.
"I can't sleep," he said.
"I'm not letting you in. We're rivals."
"It's a purely competitive visit."
"What does that mean?"
"I want to propose a wager."
Tomoya looked at him.
He looked at the cans.
He stood back and let him in.
Ren sat on the end of the bed and handed him a coffee, and Tomoya sat next to him, and they clinked cans.
"The wager," Tomoya said.
"Whoever comes first loses."
"Loses what?"
"Tomorrow's pitch order. The loser goes first, in front of Okabe, cold." Ren drank. "The winner speaks last and gets the last word."
"That's a terrible bet."
"You're scared."
"I'm not scared. You've never beaten me at anything that mattered."
"I beat you by point four percent last month."
"That was a fluke."
"Then take the bet."
Tomoya put the can down.
He took off his T-shirt.
