Chapter 24: Hotaru, Yoru
In August the plant called Gojo finally flowered.
It put out one small white bloom on the windowsill of the apartment in Nakano.
Ren stood in front of it at six in the morning in his bare feet.
"He's blooming," he said.
"He's showing off," Tomoya said.
"He's grateful. I fed him."
"You fed him tea."
"It's very good for his roots."
Tomoya laughed into his coffee.
The apartment was smaller than it had been in March.
It held two toothbrushes and two sets of suits.
The bookshelf now had real books on it, and beside the books stood a shelf of canned coffee lined up by date.
On the hall wall, pinned with four neat tacks, hung the Hot Morning poster, curled at the edges.
A box of Nagano apples sat on the kitchen table, the third that month.
Tomoya's father had sent them with a note.
It said, in his square handwriting, four words Tomoya had read so many times that the paper had gone soft.
Not bad. Eat something.
Tomoya had put the note on the fridge.
Ren put a hand on the back of his neck as he passed, and Tomoya leaned into it without thinking.
That night they were alone in the flat with the lights low and the window open.
Chihiro had made them promise to stay in for the anniversary, and she had sent a cake as a threat.
It was six months since room 507, and five weeks of dark before that.
