Chapter 23: The Opener
Damian looked at the team sheet for a long time.
Then he put the phone face down on Noah's stomach.
"Number nine," he said. "He's always wanted to play up front."
"Is that funny?"
"A bit."
"Damian. He took your ankle out."
"I know."
"In the final. From behind."
"I was there, Noah."
Damian lay back down beside him and looked at the ceiling.
"It was a late tackle," he said. "Everyone saw it. The ref gave him a yellow and said it was the heat."
"Was it the heat?"
Damian didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
The opener was Saturday at three, on the oval below the library.
The college across the river brought a bus and a drum.
Half the hall came down with eskies and folding chairs and a bedsheet with KURRAJONG painted on it in house paint.
Bec had painted it.
She'd also painted a small green towel in one corner.
"Too much?" she said.
"Yes," Noah said.
"Good."
Noah stood at the fence on the halfway line.
