Chapter 21: Love
Anders found out on a Monday in March, from his accountant, in a two-line email he read three times standing at the boardroom window.
A transfer had arrived in the account he kept for personal matters.
Sixteen thousand dollars, in one amount, from a savings account in the name of Teddy Gallagher.
Under it was a memo line in Teddy's cramped capitals.
NOT FOR THE MONEY.
He remembered the night in December when Teddy had finally agreed to take the allowance.
He remembered how stiffly the boy had said it, so as not to be difficult.
Four thousand a month.
Four months.
Not one cent of it had been spent.
Teddy had paid his rent from the bar, and bought his own coffee, and eaten Maddie's toast.
He had put every deposit into a separate account and let it sit.
He had saved it for Anders to find.
Anders sat down in the chair at the head of the walnut table and put his hand over his mouth.
His eyes burned.
He had not cried since his father's funeral.
He sat in the empty boardroom with his cousin's old chair across from him.
The mill ran below, and the smell of flour came faintly up through the floor.
