Chapter 22: The Keys

The envelope on the steel table held two keys on a brass ring and one sheet of paper.

Teddy turned the paper over twice.

It was a lease for apartment 5B in the Mill Lofts building, one floor below the penthouse.

The term was twelve months, at nine hundred and fifty dollars.

The name on it was Teddy Gallagher.

Under the signature line, in square capitals, Anders had written one sentence.

The other key is upstairs. Both are yours. Choose.

"That's a rent I can pay," Teddy said.

"It's below market. You'll note I haven't taken a dime of it."

"I will pay it. From the bar," Teddy said.

"I expected nothing less."

"And my tuition. I filed the aid forms in my own name, and the letter came on Thursday." Teddy lifted his chin. "Partial. They want proof of what I earn. I have it. I'll take the loans for the rest, and I'll pay them off, and it'll be mine."

Anders looked at him for a long moment.

Then he smiled all the way, with the lines at the corners of his eyes, and kissed Teddy's forehead.
