Chapter 23: The Long Night
Zack had never in his life been the one who was served.
Teddy understood that the second the champagne cork popped in the penthouse and Zack flinched at the sound.
"I don't deserve the good bottle," Zack said.
"It's your acceptance letter," Anders said.
"You paid for the bottle."
"I'm paying for everything about tonight, and you will say thank you exactly once." Anders passed him a glass. "To the engineering school."
"To civil engineering."
"To the first man in his family to pass structures," said Teddy, and Zack laughed until he coughed.
They drank, and Teddy took the glass out of his hand.
"Bed," he said.
"It's seven."
"Bed, Zack. You're on your back tonight and you don't move."
Zack stared at him.
"What?"
"Anders and I decided. In the elevator."
"We didn't decide," Anders said. "You decided and I agreed in the elevator."
"We decided."
The big bed was warm with lamplight.
Teddy undressed him with hands that were not shy anymore.
He peeled the sweater off over Zack's head and kissed the scar on his shoulder.
