On the last Sunday in April, at dawn, Teddy climbed the fire stairs to the roof of the mill.
He carried a blanket and two mugs of coffee.
The sky over the Mississippi had gone pink and gold.
The old Holmgren sign stood over his head in white letters, and a few early gulls wheeled below it.
Down on the fifth floor, Maddie was sleeping with her fan on and her door shut.
The sign on it said ORGO FINAL, DO NOT.
Teddy spread the blanket on the warm tar, behind the brick chimney, where nobody could see.
He heard the steel door scrape open behind him.
Two sets of boots.
"You said six," Zack said, yawning.
"It's five forty."
"That's a different thing," Zack said.
"Sit down. Drink."
Anders came last, in a dark sweater, with the silver at his temples catching the light.
He took in the blanket, the coffee, the dawn on the river, and Teddy sitting cross-legged in the middle of it.
