Chapter 9: Left Behind

Teddy's bedroom door shut behind them with a soft click, and Zack's hands were already under his jacket.

"Maddie's at her parents' in Edina," Teddy said, between kisses. "She's gone till Sunday."

"Good."

"Zack."

"Good," Zack said again, against his mouth, and walked him backward until the backs of his knees hit the bed.

They fell onto it together, laughing and breathless.

The room was small and cluttered, with a poster of Lake Superior at sunrise.

History books were piled on the desk, and Maddie had hung a string of lights over the window.

Zack pulled off his hockey sweatshirt.

His shoulders were broader than Teddy remembered, with the old white scar along the left one from a skate blade in ninth grade.

Teddy put his mouth on it.

"I used to dream about that scar," Zack said, hoarse.

"You never said."

"I wasn't brave."

Teddy sat up and peeled his own shirt over his head.

"I'm turning off my phone."

"You don't have to."

"I want to." He reached for it on the nightstand and held the button until the screen went black. "No one's calling me tonight."
