"Answer it," I said.
Pip held the phone out to me.
"You answer it. You wrote them."
"You're studio lead."
"Del, I will throw this phone at you."
I took it and put it on speaker and set it on the table.
"This is Della."
"Della." The bookstore buyer sounded like she was walking fast through an airport. "Are you sitting down?"
"I'm standing in front of sixty people."
"Good. Stay standing."
At the door, Norma stopped.
She didn't come back in. She didn't leave either.
"Four hundred stores," the buyer said. "The full sixteen. Off that press, with your name on the back. In every one of my stores by Mother's Day next year."
Nobody in the big room made a sound.
"And card fourteen in time for Christmas," she said. "My sister wants a box."
"Yes," I said. "Yes."
"I'll send the paper this afternoon. Tell the man with the wrench to oil the thing."
