Chapter 5: Overtime

The morning of the 17th was bright and clear.

Britt had spent the whole day before at Declan's door, and today she packed a bag of cheap noodles and a few hundred dollars of groceries into her room.

She locked her door afterward, and she looked right at me while she did it.

I let her.

I had nothing in the apartment left to steal.

At noon I sat on my bed with my phone and watched the hallway camera.

Declan's mother stood outside her door with two neighbors, holding a grocery bag and talking over it.

The audio was crystal clear.

"That girl from across the hall has no shame," she said. "She's a grown woman, and she's in my son's room every day. It's improper."

"Maybe she likes him," one neighbor said, laughing. "You might get a daughter-in-law!"

His mother snorted.

"She couldn't even get into college. She's twenty-three with no job, living off her sister. She wants to marry into my family? She's not in his league."

I watched the three of them laugh.

Britt was the one who had ruined my last life, and she was still a girl being sneered at in a hallway.

I felt nothing at all.

At five o'clock my phone showed one hour left.

I dialed my sister.

"Hello? Maeve, what's up?"

"Something came up at work," I said. "I'm doing overtime tonight. I won't be home."

She waited a moment before answering.

She did not tell me to be careful.
