Chapter 6: First Rain

The kitchen knife slid into the seam and stopped against steel.

Britt pushed harder.

She shoved it, twisted it, and put her whole weight behind it.

The blade snapped, and the tip skittered across the carpet.

"Fine. Don't answer. I'll talk, and you can listen."

I sat down on the concrete and hit record on my phone.

I had been planning to record her anyway.

I had not expected her to hand me the gift herself.

"You stole it from me," she said.

"Last time, I wanted Amplify, and you had it. You sat on a mountain of food for five years and you wouldn't give Declan's family one noodle."

I said nothing.

"You said you couldn't trust anyone. You said everyone out there was a wolf."
