Chapter 8: The Doorbell

The man at my door did not jump.

He did not shout or call for anyone.

He glanced once down the hall, set his lantern on the floor and sat down beside my door with his back against the wall.

Then he spoke at the doorbell in a low, level voice.

"Ms. Dunning. I'm Finnegan Ferris. I run the building's power."

"I know who you are," I said. "I've seen your name tag on the camera."

"Right. The camera." He tipped his head toward the lens. "Is it recording me?"

"Only when you press the bell."

"Good to know."

He almost smiled, and the corner of his mouth showed it.

"Your sister told the whole floor you were stuck at work and probably didn't make it," he said. "She cried when she said it. It was a very good performance."

"She's very good," I said.

"She came to me on the second day of the rain and asked me to open the water-main hatch behind your closet."

My throat went tight.

"I told her there's no hatch behind your closet," he said. "I've had the blueprints for this building memorized since I took the job. The water main runs down the east stairwell. There's nothing behind your wall except a closet-sized room your contractor built for you in the renovation."

I said nothing at all.

"I'm not asking about it," he said. "I want you to know I'm not asking."

"Why not?" I whispered.

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"Because you've got a camera on your door and a voice that sounds like a person hiding," he said. "And in this building, everyone I've seen hiding has had a good reason."
