Chapter 15: Her Own Voice
I sat on the floor in front of the crate until the sun came up.
It had stopped glowing around four.
At seven someone hammered on the frame of my broken door, and Dot walked in with a toolbox and a sack of bagels.
"I heard the whole building shake last night," she said. "Where is she?"
"Gone."
"Gone where?"
"I made her carry a box to the corner."
Dot put the bagels down.
She looked at the crate, and at my face, and she sat down beside me on the concrete.
"Is that the one you actually paid for?"
"Yes."
"Is it on?"
"It woke at two. It hasn't said anything."
"Wynn. It's been breathing for five hours and you haven't opened it?"
"I was afraid."
"Of what?"
"That it would look at me like she did."
Dot took my hand.
Then she got up, found a pry bar in the toolbox and handed it to me.
I cracked the lid.
Margot lay on the white foam in the grey slip, with the black bob and the grey eyes closed.
