Chapter 20: Backstage
At seven forty on Saturday, the Kestrel lobby smelled of lilies and champagne.
Waiters in white jackets moved under the glass.
The stage stood at the foot of the mezzanine stairs, and the screen behind it was sixty feet wide and dark.
Dot had come in with the caterers, in a hat.
She gave me a thumbs-up from across the floor, and went into the booth with a tray.
I wheeled the copper-wrapped unit through the service corridor and parked her behind the stage curtain.
The other one, the one with my face, was already there, strapped in a chair beside a monitor, wearing a Kestrel sash.
She looked small.
Margot stood behind me in a black suit with her hair brushed back and her bandaged hand in a glove.
"Are you ready?" I said.
"No."
"Good."
I pulled her into the supply room behind the curtain, shut the door, and turned the key.
It was a closet with a mop sink and a rack of folding chairs.
