Chapter 12: The Dinner

"Sit down, Mom," I said. "You're keeping our guest waiting."

My mother sat.

She laid her velvet wrap over the chair, and her fingers shook only a little.

Palmer took the seat beside her and set his portfolio on his knee.

"Gisela," the man in the gray overcoat said. "You didn't mention that your daughter had invited me."

"I didn't know," she said through her teeth.

"Neither did I, until Thursday."

I had set Theo's bassinet in the hall just outside the double doors, where I could see him sleep.

I looked at him once, then took my place at the foot of the table.

The door from the kitchen opened.

Kylie walked in.

She had on a plain blue dress and no makeup, and the bruise on her cheek had faded to yellow.

My mother's face went white.

"What is she doing here?"

"I invited her," I said. "She's family."

"She's a criminal."

"So are you," Kylie said.

Her voice shook, but she said it.

My mother turned to the man at the head of the table and spread her hands.

"Forgive me. My younger daughter is unwell. She has a history. She came to us from a county home, and I've always done my best, but she is a liar."

The wire in Kylie's collar picked up every word.

"Of course," the man said pleasantly. "Please continue."

"She stole from me for years. She lied to the police about a pregnancy that never existed. She cooked up that ridiculous stunt on the stairs with Palmer, and I had no idea."
