Chapter 20: Handcuffs

Thayer turned around on his stool with his drink still in his hand.

He saw the captain.

Then the two officers.

Then, past them, Roisin by the fireplace, and his face went slack.

"No," he said. "No, no. Not here."

"Here's where you are," the captain said.

He walked the length of the glass room with the officers behind him, and the members pulled their chairs in to let them pass.

Somebody's wife put her hand over her mouth.

Somebody's husband got his phone out.

"Thayer Ellery, you're under arrest for malicious destruction of property and conspiracy."

The captain held up a folded paper.

"There's more coming."

"This is insane. I'm a member here."

"I'm sure they'll hold your locker."

One of the officers took the glass out of Thayer's hand and set it on the bar.

The other one turned him around.

Thayer let himself be turned.

The cuffs went on with a click that carried all the way to the fireplace.

I've heard a lot of cuffs close.

I'd never enjoyed one before.

Carina was standing by the coat check with a waiter beside her, holding her own red coat.

She'd stopped crying.

She was filming it.

Old Whitlow walked over, took the phone out of her hand, and put it in his pocket.

"Not anymore," he said.

The officers walked Thayer down the glass room.

He went quietly until he got to the fireplace.

Then he planted his feet.

"Roisin."

The officers stopped, because the captain lifted a hand.

Roisin was standing between Cal and me.

She didn't step forward.

She didn't step back either.

"Roisin, please." Thayer's voice cracked down the middle. "Tell them it was a mistake. Tell them you don't want to press anything."

"Why would I tell them that?"

"Because of the baby."

He was crying now, in front of all of them.

"Do you want our kid to grow up with a father in jail?"

Roisin thought about it.

She actually thought about it, with her head a little on one side.

"I want my kid to grow up knowing what's true," she said. "So here's what I'll do."

"Anything. Anything."
