Chapter 18: What He Wouldn't Buy
Jasper Quarles had been summoned to a great many rooms in his life, and he had never been glad to walk into one.
Ambrose Tarleton's study was paneled in dark oak, with a fire going and a ledger open on the desk.
The old man did not rise.
"Sit, Mr. Quarles."
"I'll stand."
"As you like." Ambrose turned the ledger around. "I have a proposal."
Jasper read it standing.
It was a list of properties. Four warehouses on the east docks. Two berths at the harbor. A block of shares in a shipping line that his own company had tried to buy for six years.
"Your grandfather and I agreed on a dowry," Ambrose said. "I have never wished to disappoint him. It is yours on the day you marry my granddaughter, and the day is my birthday."
"Willa doesn't want to marry me."
"Willa does not know what she wants. She never has."
Jasper looked at the old man's hands on the head of the stick.
They were spotted, and they shook a little. They were very strong.
"I knew her grandmother," Ambrose said. "A hard woman, and a fine one. I did her a wrong, once, and I have not been able to put it right. This is the tidy way."
"With Willa as the payment."
"With Willa as the heiress to what her grandmother should have had."
"She wasn't asked."
"She is twenty-five. She will be told."
Jasper closed the ledger.
"I don't take a dowry," he said. "I'll marry nobody on your birthday or any other day unless she chooses it herself, in her own words."
"Then the family trust stops her mother's allowance on Friday."
