Chapter 19: Mill Lane

The nurse at Saint Anne's gave Willa a folded receipt, and said, kindly, "It all goes to Mr. Quarles's office now."

Willa stood in the corridor and read the line twice.

Paid in full to December. Account holder: J. Quarles. No notes.

Her mother was asleep in the chair, with the needle taped to her hand and the scarf slipping off her head.

Willa did not wake her.

She went down in the lift, out through the glass doors, and across the car park to the black car at the curb.

Jasper was in the back with a laptop on his knee.

He saw her face and closed it.

"The clinic," he said.

"You paid for my mother."

"I did."

"You didn't ask me."

"I knew what you would say."

"What would I have said?"

"No." He got out and stood in front of her in the cold. "You'd have said no."

"And?"

"And next Friday the trust would have stopped. You'd have gone to your grandfather and taken whatever he told you to take."

"That's mine to decide."

"Yes."

"So why did you?"

"Because I could." He did not look away.

"I've spent thirty-three years paying for things I didn't want. This is the first one I wanted."

The wind pulled at her hair.

"I'm not a debt," Willa said.

"I never said you were."

"I paid for that cottage with my body. It was the only honest deal I've made in three years."

Her voice cracked.

"You turned the numbers into something else. I don't know what to do with it."

"Then do nothing with it."

"I can't."

She stood there with the receipt crushed in her fist.

He took one step closer.

"I said something I shouldn't have to your sister," he said, low.

"What?"

"Yesterday, at the clinic. I said the word term. She asked me what term."

"And you said?"

"Nothing. She let me say it."

Willa shut her eyes.

"Then she knows."

"She knows there's an arrangement. She doesn't know what."

"She'll work it out by dinner." Willa opened her eyes. "Get in the car."

"Where are we going?"

"You want to know what you paid for? I'll show you."

Prarc Town was an hour north, down a road lined with bare maples.

Mill Lane was at the far end of it, a gravel track with a post box at the head.
