I read my grandfather's last letter on a bench in the garden at Bay Ridge, the morning after the vault.

The fig tree was wrapped in burlap for the winter, and the grass was white with frost.

I sat there in my coat with the envelope in my lap, and I broke the cracked wax with my thumbnail.

Mirella, you are outside, I hope, because that house always kept the cold.

Leandro came down the steps with his sling off and his left arm held stiff, and he stopped a few paces from the bench.

"Your captain says the lawyer's car is here," he said. "I told him I'd find you first."
