Chapter 6: A Year, Then Lidia
My father followed us home in the white truck.
He parked behind Vasco's car with two wheels on Avó's roses, and got out with his arms already spread.
"My daughter!"
I let him hug me.
He smelled of cigarettes and the good cologne, and under both of them he smelled like someone who had not slept.
"Mr. Teixeira," Vasco said.
"Armando, please. We're family." Papa shook his hand with both of his. "I came to see how my girl is doing."
"At nine at night."
"A father worries."
Vasco looked at him for a long, unfriendly moment.
Then he looked at me.
I could see him weighing it, whether to stay.
"I'll be inside," he said. "Avó wants to hear about the Gomes de Sá."
"I'll come in a minute."
"Take your time, Ines."
He went up the porch steps and through the screen door, and it banged behind him.
My father put his arm around my shoulders and walked me to the swing at the end of the porch.
He sat me down beside him.
"So," he said. "How is the house?"
"It's big."
"And he's good to you?"
"He's not unkind," I said.
"He looked at you like unkind was not the problem."
My father laughed and patted my knee.
"Good. Keep that up. It's all going exactly right."
"What's going right, Papa?"
"The year," he said.
He lowered his voice.
"You keep him warm. You keep him docile. By June he'll be eating out of your hand, and when Lidia comes back, he'll be so grateful for any Teixeira at all that he won't care which."
