Chapter 10: Nothing About the Husband
The funeral was on Tuesday, in a small stone church in Charlestown with forty people in it.
Most of them were harbor men in their good jackets, who sang loud and badly.
Maeve sat at the back in a black dress and watched Niall carry one corner of his father's coffin.
He did not cry.
His jaw worked, and his big hands held the wood, and when the coffin went into the hearse he stood on the curb and stared at nothing.
Her mother had not called on Monday, and Maeve had not called her.
Peg had texted at noon: Waylon's desk is in a cardboard box. Thought you'd want to know.
Maeve had put the phone face down and gone back to bed.
After the lunch in the church basement, Niall found her by the coat rack.
"Come out on the water," he said.
"Now?"
"I've got the tug at the Fort Point channel, and my father would have wanted it. He used to say a man isn't buried until somebody's taken a boat out in his honor."
"Isn't that a sailor's saying?"
"He made it up. He made most things up." Niall almost smiled. "Come on, Maeve. One hour."
It was the first time he had said her name without a bed rail between them.
She went.
The tug was a squat red working boat with a wheelhouse barely big enough for two.
Niall took her out past the airport lights and the sleeping container cranes, and cut the engine in open water.
The harbor went black and silver around them.
A cold wind came off the water, and he handed her a canvas jacket that smelled of diesel and tea.
She put it on and sat on an overturned crate.
