Chapter 11: Sweetheart
"Okay," I said.
"Wonderful! Six o'clock. Wear something pretty, darling. Oh, and Abigail?"
"Yes?"
"Your father and I are so proud of you."
She hung up before I could answer.
Stuart was leaning in the bedroom doorway in his T-shirt, holding two coffees.
"Your mother?"
"She's proud of me."
He handed me a cup.
"How does that feel?"
I thought about it.
"Like when a stranger on the train smiles at you, and then asks for money."
He laughed so hard he spilled his coffee.
On Sunday we drove to Oak Park in a car Harriet lent us.
I had never pulled into my parents' driveway in a car before.
Mom was waiting on the front step.
She hugged me.
It was stiff and quick, like she'd read about hugging in a magazine.
Then she hugged Stuart much longer.
"Our son-in-law," she said. "Come in, come in."
The dining room had been set with the good china.
