His palm was warm against my lips.
I could feel him trying not to laugh.
I took his wrist and pulled his hand down.
"It could happen," I said.
"It really, really can't," Stuart said.
"You don't know that."
"I know it very well."
Toby snorted into his water glass.
Meredith's hand slid off my arm.
She looked from me to Stuart and back, and she didn't understand what she was looking at.
Mom did.
Her face went tight.
"Stuart, please. Be sensible. Abigail doesn't mind either way. She never has."
"I mind," Stuart said.
He didn't raise his voice.
He took my hand on top of the tablecloth and held it where everyone could see.
"You all think I got stuck with the leftover daughter."
Nobody answered.
"I want to tell you how I really met Abigail."
I looked at him.
"We met at Rosa's," I said. "At the ring."
"No," he said. "We met two years ago. At Northwestern Memorial."
