Chapter 16: Ten Tables
I looked down at him.
At the ring. At the empty lobby. At his bright gray eyes, waiting.
I thought about saying okay.
It was what I always said.
"Yes," I said instead.
He broke into a smile.
"Yes?"
"Yes. I want to."
He put the ring on my finger, next to the plain silver one.
I wouldn't let him take the silver one off.
Then he stood up and kissed me in the middle of Drummond Tower, and the night guard pretended to read his newspaper.
The next morning Stuart spread a map of Chicago on the kitchen table.
"Anywhere you want," he said. "The Drake. The Art Institute. A boat on the lake. A castle in Ireland."
"Rosa's," I said.
He stared at me.
"Rosa's?"
"Ten tables," I said. "Lemon cake."
"Abigail, we can afford anything."
"I know," I said. "I want Rosa's."
He laughed and folded up the map.
"Rosa's."
It was the first thing I'd ever picked in my life.
We got married again on the first Saturday in May.
It was warm, and nobody spilled anything.
Rosa closed the restaurant for the whole day and cried through the entire ceremony.
