Chapter 9: Valet
Victor was the first to move.
He picked the check up off the coffee table and folded it in half.
"Your loss, sweetheart."
He tucked it back in his pocket and stood up.
Mom stood up too. Her lips were pressed so tight they'd gone white.
"I don't know who you think you are," she said.
"I'm Abigail," I said. "Same as always."
"Don't you get smart with me."
"I'm not. I'm just saying no."
She looked at me.
Then she looked at Stuart, still standing by the kitchen.
"This is you. You did this to her."
Stuart unfolded his arms.
"No, Mrs. Kemp," he said politely. "She did that all by herself."
Meredith walked to the door and paused there.
"You're going to be so sorry, Abby. Enjoy your stairs."
Victor stopped on the landing.
"The creditors are throwing a little party at Drummond Tower on the nineteenth. The night before the auction."
He smiled at Stuart.
"Come. Say goodbye to your daddy's building. I'll put you on the list."
