Chapter 11: The Green Door

My friend from the office took Ivy out of my arms in the church parking lot without asking a single question.

"Go," she said. "I've got her."

Hamish already had the truck running.

We caught up with the black sedan at the second light, then lost it on the highway, and by the time we reached my street I knew where she'd gone.

She had gone home.

Home was a brick house with a green door and two oak trees, and the hedge Dalton and I planted the year Ivy was born.

Hailey stood on the front porch in her wedding dress, with the baby in the crook of one arm.

A phone sat propped on a tripod at the top of the steps, its screen turned out to the lawn.

The neighbors had come out to stand on the grass.

A man across the street was filming too.

"They're live," Hamish said, and parked crooked at the curb.

I got out.

I could see the number from the sidewalk: 4,812 watching.

"My sister," Hailey said to the lens, and her voice was thick and shaking and sweet, "is married to a man she met on Thursday. Thursday! She walked into my wedding and humiliated me in front of everyone I love. I had a baby four days ago. I almost died."

The baby was crying, a thin, tired wail.

Her thumb stroked his back without looking.

"Hailey," I said.

"Please, everyone, I just want to keep my family together."

The neighbors shifted.

A woman near the hedge looked at the dress, and the baby, and me, and did not seem sure of anything.

I had thought the church would be the end of it.
