Chapter 16: Through the Chain
Marina's POV
I rang the bell and held my finger on it.
Nobody came.
I rang it again, and I called through the wood, "Ivy! It's Mommy!"
A shape moved in the glass beside the door.
The chain rattled, and the door opened four inches.
Hailey stood in the gap in a gray cardigan with the baby on her shoulder.
She looked tired and gentle and entirely at home.
"Marina. Don't shout. She's just eaten."
"Let me see her."
"Dalton said only you can come in. Not him."
"I'm not going in there without a witness."
"Then you can talk through the door." Her smile was kind. "I'm not the one keeping her from you."
"Mommy?"
Ivy's voice, from somewhere behind Hailey's hip.
Hailey moved a step to the side, because she knew how it would look if she didn't.
My daughter squeezed into the gap in her yellow dress, with a stripe of jam on her chin.
I knelt on the doormat.
She pushed her hand through the opening.
I took it in both of mine.
It was small and sticky and warm, and her fingers gripped like she was dangling from a ledge.
"Hi, bug."
"Daddy says I'm sleeping here tonight."
"I know."
"He says it's only till the judge."
"That's right."
"Is the judge mean?"
"I don't think so. I think she's a very fair lady."
"Can I bring Rabbit?"
"Rabbit is right here in my bag. I'll leave him on the step."
"Okay." Her chin shook. "Are you coming tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow at nine o'clock I'll be in a big room with a lot of people, and I will say out loud that you are mine. And you will hold my hand the whole time. I promise."
