Josie's POV

Caleb's hand was warm in mine, and it was shaking.

I knew what my mouth was going to do.

It had done it my whole life.

It opened by itself, to say fine, and be quiet, and take it.

I shut it.

My mother stood three feet from me on the porch with her glass still in her hand.

Her face was the one I had looked up at from the floor.

"Be generous," she said again.

"I was," I said.

Nobody moved.

"I was generous when I was six and gave Bianca my birthday cake because she cried. I was generous when I was twelve and gave her my room. I was generous every time she wanted something of mine, and every time you said, she's sick, Josie, let her."

"Josie..."

"I gave her my boyfriends. All of them. You told me to smile at the wedding of one."

My cousin's phone had stopped moving.

"I'm done," I said. "No."

Mom's mouth shook.

"You can't mean that."

"I mean it. No. He's not a thing I own, so I can't give him away. And if I could, I wouldn't. Not for a season. Not for a night."

Out on the rail, Bianca laughed.

It was an odd, high sound, and nobody had ever heard her laugh like that.

"Fine," she said. "Then watch."

"Bianca, sit down," Dad said.

She bent her knees.

She jumped.

She dropped four feet onto the soft lawn and landed on her good foot, and then she screamed, and fell on her side, and clutched her ankle.
