Chapter 24: Every Door Open
The wedding was on the lodge lawn, in the first week of October, with the aspens turning gold behind the chairs.
Caleb's mother had taken the blue-flowered bowl off the lodge hall table the day after the police left.
In its place she had put a jar of wild asters.
"I like asters," she said, when I noticed. "Also I like not thinking about bowls."
I stood in the middle room with Aunt Gwen fastening the buttons down my back.
Every door in the lodge stood open.
Caleb's father had offered to have locks fitted for the guests' comfort, and Caleb had said no in his plainest voice.
"It's a family house," Caleb had said. "Nobody gets shut in."
My aunt's bracelets clicked against my spine.
"You look like your grandmother," she said. "She also never asked anyone for anything."
"I've started asking."
"Good." She turned me around by the shoulders. "My husband and I are getting a small place near the park."
"You're taking him back?"
"He sent me a card a day for a month. Most of them were about his tie." She wiped her eye. "I'm a weak woman."
"You're not."
"I'm a weak woman who is going to sit in the second row and cry."
She did.
Dad walked me down the grass.
He wore a rented suit that fit him, and his hand on my arm was damp.
"I won't say anything," he said.
"Then don't."
"I'm just going to hold on."
"That's fine."
The guests turned in their chairs.
Caleb's parents sat in front, his mother in navy again, his father with a cardigan under his jacket.
My cousin and her boyfriend were there, and my other aunt, and the young man in the work jacket, who had been invited by Caleb's father and who sat very straight at the edge of a row.
