Chapter 7: Her Right

I didn't answer right away.

In my first life, nobody ever asked me what I wanted done about Quentin.

They told me what had already been done.

"If I say no?" I asked.

"Then I don't file," Simon said. "I keep watching him, and I write it down. You can change your mind next week or next year."

"And if I say yes?"

"Then his name goes in front of a judge, the papers get it, and your family hates you in public instead of in private."

"They already hate me in public. You were there."

"I was."

I looked out the window.

The car hadn't moved. We were still at the curb outside the Talcott Harbor Hotel.

On the steps, Quentin had come out the front doors.

He was trying to get to our car.

Two hotel security officers stood in front of him with their arms folded, the same two from the thirty-first floor.

The reporters swarmed him immediately.

Microphones went up around his face.

He lifted a hand to block a camera and missed.

I'd seen that man stand on Mama's porch and promise me everything.

"Yes," I said. "File it."

Simon nodded once and wrote something on the folder.

"But I want things," I said.

He looked up.

"I want the whole fund back. All one hundred eighty-three thousand four hundred, not what's left. I want my phone and my license and my bag. And I want Gage's tuition, the way Quentin promised it on that porch."

"Who's Gage?"

"My brother."

Simon's eyebrow went up, the one with the scar.

"My other brother," I said. "The one who raised me. He fixes cars in Liberty, North Carolina. He quit nursing school in his last year so I could finish college. Quentin swore he'd send him back."

"Did he?"

"No."

Simon wrote that down too.
