Chapter 8: The Peacemaker

I let Rowan into the suite, and Torin came in behind him and shut the door halfway.

That was rule three, and it was the only one I was still sure of.

Rowan didn't sit.

He stood in the middle of the carpet with a leather folder against his chest, and he looked at Arlo asleep on the bed and then at the floor.

"Say it," I said quietly.

"She told me you were going to hurt yourself."

"Who did?"

"Cora." He swallowed. "She came to my office the night of the dinner. She said you'd been seen at the river after dark. She said the Alpha was too grieved to deal with it and that if I didn't get you out of the territory fast, you wouldn't see the spring."

I looked at him.

"And you believed her."

"I wanted to," he said. "It was easier than finding out what had really happened. You were crying in the car all the way down Route 1. I told myself it was the grief."

"I was crying because I'd been hit in front of twenty people."

"I know that now."

"You carried my bag to the gate."

"I did."

"You hugged me."

"Yes."

His voice broke on it.

I had spent five years deciding what I would do to him if I ever saw his face again.

It was different, with the face in front of me.

"Why are you here, Rowan?"

He opened the folder.

"Because I run the trade accounts, and last night I couldn't sleep, so I went through them." He laid out a sheaf of printouts. "Every month since you left, a transfer goes from the Maddox bloodline fund to the relief fund. The same amount, the exact sum of your stipend. It's marked as authorized by the Beta's office."
