Chapter 15: Order Closed

Luke's POV

I drove to the hospital with the window down, because I thought I might be sick.

It was almost ten when I walked in through the staff door.

I was on leave, but my badge still opened it.

The waiting room was empty except for an old man asleep under the television.

I stood in the exact spot where I had held Shelby by both elbows, and I made myself look at the floor.

I had stood here while my brother's hand turned purple.

Then I went looking for the one person on that ward I could not look in the face.

The charge nurse in the gray cardigan was on nights this week.

She was at the supply room counter, counting gloves, and she saw me and put the box down.

"Dr. Fennimore," she said. "You're supposed to be home."

"I need to see what Shelby's login did on Saturday."

"That's a request for the administrator."

"I know."

"Then why are you here at ten at night?"

"Because I can't face my mother," I said, "until I've done one thing right."

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then she unlocked her locker, took out a folded sheet of paper, and held it against her chest.

"I printed this Saturday night," she said. "I didn't know who to give it to. I told myself the review would find it, and then I told myself the review wouldn't."

She handed it over.

It was a screen history from the triage terminal, in small gray type.

I read the line she had circled.
