Chapter 8: Leave Your Badge
On Monday morning the hospital administrator saw me in a conference room with a long oak table and a pitcher of water nobody touched.
She was a thin woman in a gray suit who had clearly been awake since the video reached her inbox.
"Mrs. Fennimore," she said. "Let me begin by saying how sorry we are."
"Thank you."
"This is the head of nursing, the charge nurse from Saturday, and our security supervisor."
"And Shelby?" I said.
"Is on her way."
Bernice sat on my left with her handbag in her lap.
Luke sat on my right, in a clean shirt and the same tired eyes.
He had slept on the couch with his head on a cushion beside Teddy's, and I had watched him do it from the stairs.
Shelby came in at nine sharp.
She wore a pale blue blouse, and her hair was down, and she had a man in a tie beside her with a folder.
Her union representative said good morning to everyone and told the room that his client had been under severe strain.
Shelby said nothing at all.
She sat across from me with her hands folded and looked straight at me.
"We'll start with what the hospital knows," the administrator said. "I've seen the clip that's been shared. I'd like to see anything else, Mrs. Fennimore, if you have it."
I put my phone on the table.
I pressed play, and my own voice filled the room.
This is my seven-year-old son.
I let it run to the end.
Nobody spoke while the blur of ceiling tile came and went.
"That begins after the first three blows," I said. "The first three are in a clip a woman posted on Saturday night. It has been seen sixty thousand times. You have it."
