Chapter 14: Table Nine
Gunther Ebert took table nine at seven-fifteen on the Friday after Thanksgiving, and he ordered the cod.
I saw him through the pass window with a basket in my fist.
He wore the gray jacket and the good watch.
He had the nurse's table, and the nurse had moved to the bar without being asked.
"Table nine says he'd like a word with the cook," the twenty-year-old server whispered.
"Tell him I'm busy."
"He said you'd say that. He said to tell you he brought a picture."
My stomach went cold.
I wiped my hands on my apron and walked out into the dining room.
Karl was at the far end of the bar pulling a pint for the bowling team.
He did not look up, and I was glad.
"Miss Wrobel," Gunther said. "Please. Sit."
"I'm working."
"This will take a minute."
He turned his phone face up on the paper tablecloth and slid it across to me with one finger.
It was the alley behind Hartmann's.
It was sharp and clear, with the wet brick behind us and the dumpster lid.
