Chapter 18: Cold Room
The walk-in was cold enough to fog our breath, and I had my back against the cod racks with Karl's mouth on my neck.
It was two in the afternoon on Tuesday.
The tavern was dark and the delivery was done, and the only sound was the compressor humming over our heads.
"You said a better place to be loud," he said into my skin.
"It's freezing in here."
"Then I'll warm you up."
He had a rocks glass in one hand.
He had carried it in from the bar without telling me, and it was full of ice.
I felt his other hand on my belt.
"Hartmann," I said. "What's the glass for?"
"Wait."
He set it on a shelf of lemons.
His fingers undid my buttons one at a time, and the cold air hit my skin as each one opened.
My nipples drew up hard at once.
He pushed my jacket off my shoulders and my shirt open and stood back to look.
My bra was white lace, and my breath smoked.
"You're covered in goosebumps."
"That's your fault."
"Good," he said, with perfect satisfaction.
He unhooked my bra and let it drop on the crate beside us.
He took one cube of ice out of the glass and put it in his mouth.
I watched his cheek move.
He bent his head and closed his cold mouth over my nipple.
I cried out and grabbed his hair.
It was a sharp, bright shock, cold and then hot as his tongue moved over me.
He rolled the ice around the peak, slow, and sucked.
"Karl."
It was out before I could think.
He lifted his head, and the ice clicked on his teeth.
"Say it again."
"Karl," I said. "I'm done with the rules. Say my name."
He swallowed the ice.
"Basia," he said.
His voice cracked on it.
"Basia Wrobel. I've wanted to say that out loud in front of people for three months."
I kissed him.
His mouth was cold and then burning, and he tasted of lime and metal and himself.
"Say it again," I said.
"Basia."
"Again."
"My Basia," he said, and I came a little, just from that, standing there.
