Chapter 19: The Cabin

"You booked a cabin without asking me," I said.

Rain came down on the roof of the rented place in Two Harbors in sheets.

The only light was the glow from the wood stove.

Matti knelt in front of it, feeding in kindling, with his back to me and his shirt stuck to the scratches.

"I booked it on Tuesday," he said. "You were at work."

"I could have had a shift."

"You didn't."

"I could have," I said.

"Kaisa, I looked at your schedule on the fridge."

I stood in the middle of the cabin with my bag still on my shoulder.

It was one room, with a plank floor and a quilt on a big iron bed pushed up against the log wall.

There was a pot of coffee and a bottle of wine on the table and a basket of firewood.

Nobody within a mile of us in any direction.

It was the first place we had been together where nobody knew.

I wanted to be angry, and I couldn't find it.

"You don't get to plan my weekends," I said.

"Okay."

"Next time you ask."

"Next time I'll ask," he said.

"And you'll say please."

He shut the stove door and looked at me over his shoulder, and a slow smile spread over his face.

"Please take your clothes off," he said.

I dropped my bag on the floor.

"That wasn't what I meant."

"You didn't say what you meant."

I crossed the room and took the front of his shirt in both fists and pulled him up to his feet.

"Take yours off first," I said.

He did.

I stripped the rest of him, boots and jeans and all, until he stood in front of the stove with the orange light on his chest and every scratch I'd ever given him dark against his skin.

I put my mouth on the newest one, over his heart, and he drew a breath.

"Get on the bed," I said. "On your back."

"Yes, ma'am."

"I told you."

"I know. I like making you say it," he said.
